Higher Ground Articles
"Spirituality and Warfare"

In the days immediately following 9/11, there were many Christian Scientists struggling to connect a human response to their prayers of a more absolute nature. Clearly the Bible and spirituality that follows Christ -- models and metrics of faith that Mrs. Eddy demands of her followers -- teach that the only measure of what we really understand spiritually is how we conduct ourselves humanly.

Individuals of deep faith and conscience may have differing human responses, and politics, but the Christian, let alone one who is informed by the demands of discipleship from Mrs. Eddy (see Miscellaneous Writings page 107), is called to have those human views influenced and governed by something higher than temporal structures of the right or left.

As I post this article, I realize that we are in the midst of a closely contested presidential contest in The United States and that three years have passed since the context for this talk. I still receive requests for this talk though, and I believe the process of wrestling with what it suggests is still relevant. I leave it to your judgement as to whether I am correct.

"Sharing with Other Christians"

This article grew out of a course that I taught at Principia College's Alumni Week in 1986. The article appeared in both "The Principia Purpose" as well as "Progress at Principia" in the Winter/Spring of 1987. Principia has since given me the rights to the article. The article did evoke more reader response than any previous article Principia had published, and it engendered a lot of discussion about our own Christianity, and how we relate to other Christian churches and individuals.

Following the publication of the article, there werer a number of requests to speak to groups around the country and in 1988 my first and only tape series appeared entitled "Cherishing Our Heritage as Christians." In perusing this website, you may notice that I am still talking about that critical need. I hope that you find this article to be helpful to your own spiritual journey.
